From October 2024 to October 2026, ASBL Lubumbashi and Picha Editions are collaborating to create a Subjective Atlas. Through a series of workshops centered around subjective mapping, residents of Lubumbashi participated in mapping from their perspectives, addressing urban challenges through personal experiences. Following the design methodology of Subjective Editions, these personal maps will be compiled into an atlas bringing together several perspectives, which will be published in 2026.
On October 22 , 2024 the first workshop took place at Atelier Picha in Lubumbashi followed by one on 28 October as part of Biennale de Lubumbashi with the aim to develop a ‘Subjective Atlas of Lubumbashi’ with local creatives. On October 30, a workshop at the rural atelier of Picha art center with the women of the Makeacha community took place. Responding on their relation with Lubumbashi the women gave insight in the role of the city for their economic structures, as well as care as they lack a nearby hospital, and many used the city as a source. However their situation is dire, some used to live in Lubumbashi but couldn’t survive without a job or regular income. Makwacha offers another rural and basic lifestyle, for many not as a choice but as the only means of survival. Their stories were reflected in the drawings they made.
ASBL Picha (Sammy Baloji and Filip de Boeck) invited Subjective Editions to develop a "Subjective Atlas of Lubumbashi" during the 8th edition of the toxicity in order to lead the different layers of the city, from toxicité to beauty, from suffering to hope, in perspective. The team is composed of Annelys de Vet (Subjective Editions) as the Editor-in-Chief, Kurt Vanbellghem (Subjective Editions) overseeing publication, Filip de Boeck (University of Leuven) as the publisher, and Sammy Baloji (Picha) as the editor and selection partner.
