Khaled Hourani

Khaled Hourani is a prominent Palestinian artist, curator, and art critic, renowned for his multifaceted contributions to contemporary art and culture. His work spans various mediums, including painting, sculpture, writing, and conceptual art.Beyond his artistic endeavors, Hourani has played a pivotal role in nurturing the Palestinian art scene, notably through his leadership at the International Academy of Art Palestine (IAAP) in Ramallah.

In 2007, Hourani collaborated in the creation of Subjective Atlas of Palestine as both an artist and a curator. He contributed his own artistic work to the project while also facilitating the collaboration of other Palestinian artists. This initiative aimed to counteract the often one-dimensional portrayals of Palestine in mainstream media, offering a more nuanced and humanized narrative.

A notable symbol emerging from this project is the "Watermelon Flag." In 2007, Hourani designed this flag, which features a watermelon motif, as a creative response to the Israeli ban on displaying the Palestinian flag. The watermelon became an emblem of resistance, cleverly circumventing restrictions while expressing national identity and defiance.
