Moniek Driesse

Dr. Moniek Driesse is a designer, researcher, and cultural producer whose work explores the intersection of design, social engagement, and critical cartography. She is deeply involved in participatory design processes that amplify marginalised voices and foster alternative perspectives on place, identity, and cultural narratives. After joining the Subjectieve Atlas van Nederland (2005) Moniek has played an essential role in creating several editions of the Subjective Atlas series, namely those of MexicoHainaut, and Colombia, where she facilitated collaborative workshops and guided the creative process.

Her involvement with the Subjective Atlas of Mexico (2011) allowed her to map and visualise complex socio-political dynamics and cultural diversity from a grassroots perspective. In Hainaut (2013), she worked closely with local communities in Belgium to surface regional stories, while in Colombia (2015), she co-curated contributions that reflected the nuanced realities of its people and landscapes.

With a background in design and a passion for participatory methods, Moniek Driesse is committed to creating projects that challenge dominant narratives, highlight local agency, and foster critical reflection on how we represent and understand our environments.
